Do a child's best interests and father's rights go hand in hand?

6998153_S.jpgAs frequent visitors to our blog know, we often like to talk about Missouri law and how it affects residents here in St. Louis County and across Missouri. In a post back in February last year, we talked about the push across the nation for joint custody arrangements, which oftentimes provide a middle ground between fathers' rights advocates and a child's best interests. In the post, we left it up to our readers to decide whether they thought the same way.

Child returned to mother after grandfather's claim rejected

13588019_S.jpgA child was returned to her mother after another state's Supreme Court rejected claims for custody by the child's grandfather. According to a report, the grandfather petitioned for custody of the child after the child's mother left the child in that state while the mother returned to her home state for a job interview.

Could legislation reduce the divorce rate in Missouri? - Part 2

Not only that, but if the couple has children, the mother would receive custody of the children for the first seven years following the divorce.

Could legislation reduce the divorce rate in Missouri? - Part 1

7715818_s.jpgA recent news article reported that Missouri Speaker of the House, Timothy Jones, is planning on introducing legislation that is aimed at increasing the marriage rate, reducing the number of "out-of-wedlock" babies and making it more difficult to obtain a divorce in the state. Apparently another goal of the legislation is to make it financially less attractive for unmarried women to have children. This is according to a national marriage consultant and co-founder of Marriage Savers.

Bill in Missouri State Senate could threaten some fathers' rights

The result of one father's 6-year custody battle is a bill introduced by one of the members of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys that would allow an adoption of a child without the father's consent. What many people don't know is that Missouri law requires an unmarried father to declare paternity of a child within 15 days of that child's birth. But what about fathers who are not informed of a partners pregnancy or their pending fatherhood in a timely manner?
