Divorce parties: Here’s why they are often a good idea

Rituals and ceremonies are important parts of human life, and they are present in all cultures. Here in America, we have ceremonies surrounding birth, death and everything in between. That includes graduation, marriage, birthdays and anniversaries, just to name a few.

In light of this, it is curious that divorce parties remain controversial. Some believe that divorce parties are a must, while others find them to be poor taste. Should divorce be an entirely somber and private event, or is it appropriate to let off a little steam after making the difficult transition from married to single?

There may be no right or wrong answer to this question, in part, because divorce parties are often as varied as the people who throw them. Some are as simple as a low-key evening out with friends to thank them for their support, while others may be raucous and rowdy like a bachelor or bachelorette party.

No matter what kind of party you throw, there are some good arguments to be made in favor of having a divorce party. The first is that, after a very difficult and stressful divorce, it is important to remind yourself that there are many people who still love and appreciate you. It’s also good to remember that there is still plenty of life left to be lived after divorce.

Divorce parties can also serve two practical purposes. First, they allow you to share the news of your divorce with many people at once. Therefore, you likely won’t need to tell the story over and over again during the next months and years. Second, they can be a great way to remind people that you are now single (if dating again is something you are ready to do).

Finally, divorce parties are valuable because they show that there is more than one way to view a situation. Take funerals, for instance. Most funerals are thought of as sad events where we come to mourn the dead. But funerals can also be a celebration of a life well-lived.

Divorce parties can be the same. Divorce is often regarded as an end, but people too often forget that it is also a new beginning. It’s not all going to be positive, but nor does it have to be entirely negative.

If you’re getting divorced, consider whether or not a divorce party is right for you. No matter how you choose to celebrate, please remember that after a difficult divorce, a celebration may be in order.
