Missouri woman is granted same-sex divorce

4141504_S.jpgWhen people get married, it is normally with the best of intentions. Unfortunately, there are situations where, despite the intentions, a marriage ends in divorce. Missouri couples who are seeking to file for divorce often face a lot of hurdles. In a recent case, one Missouri woman faced unique challenges unlike most other divorce cases in the state.

Children stolen from guardian's legal custody found in Missouri

9292215_S.jpgParents are responsible for ensuring the emotional and physical well-being of any children in their care. In some situations, the best interests of the child means that legal custody must be given to a Missouri adult who will provide the care that a parent may not be able to provide. Regardless of the circumstances, providing a safe and nurturing environment for the child is the goal of child custody cases.

Relationship & divorce studies: Are the results actually useful?

9373350_L.jpgIt feels as though dozens of studies are published each year attempting to draw definitive conclusions about relationships, marriage and divorce. While these studies are interesting, the results definitely need to be understood in context. Moreover, readers need to remember that such studies cannot predict the fate of a given couple or the outcomes of a particular action.

Actor's custody dispute continues with appellate win

20125528_S.jpgActor Jason Patric is one step closer to being recognized as the legal father of his biological son. Patric and on-again off-again girlfriend Danielle Schreiber conceived the child through in vitro fertilization. About a year after their son was born, the couple broke up for good. That is about all they agree on.

A first for Missouri: Court OKs divorce for same-sex couple, p2

1797676_S.jpgWe are continuing our discussion of a divorce case, a divorce case quite unusual for Missouri. A state court recently granted a divorce to a same-sex couple, even though same-sex marriage is prohibited in the state. When we left off, we were talking about comity, the legal principle on which the judge based her opinion.

A first for Missouri: Court OKs divorce for same-sex couple

15696030_S.jpgSame-sex marriage advocates may have scored a victory at the end of April when a Missouri judge granted a divorce to a same-sex couple. The women, who live in Columbia, had married in Massachusetts five years ago. The decision is significant for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that it may be the first of its kind in Missouri. While their union was legal under the laws of Massachusetts, it is not recognized here. The Missouri Defense of Marriage Act stipulates that a marriage must be between a man and a woman.

Working toward healthy co-parenting is not impossible

20206330_S.jpgThere is no question that going through a divorce can prove to be a rather harrowing experience for most men. On the one hand, you may feel great joy as you are no longer caught in an otherwise unhappy relationship and are free to start down a new path in life. On the other hand, you may have difficulty adjusting to new surroundings and, of course, new child custody arrangements.
