Could life on Mars take precedence over raising family on Earth?

6754149_S.jpgFrom time to time, many frustrated parents might have fantasized about leaving everything behind -- their spouse, kids, pets, the family home, everything -- and bolting out the door for parts unknown, even outer space. While these frustrations are nearly always temporary and cooler heads soon prevail, one parent might take that sentiment to the extreme and literally go to live on another planet.

The man applied for a position with the Mars One project, which aims to send people to that planet starting in the year 2024. There were more than 200,000 applicants for 24 spots in the project; the man has now made the cut to about the final 1,000 people. If he is selected, he could go on a six-month journey to the Red Planet. The catch? He would never return to life on Earth.

Understandably, this is beginning to cause duress in his family. The man's wife wonders if she should divorce him now or in several years, if he is selected. The man's older children from a previous relationship would be adults by the time of the trip, but his younger children, including one who is just 6 months old, would be deprived of having their dad around in their formative years -- and the rest of their lives.

This is obviously a unique situation, but many men in the St. Louis area might be thinking about their future in relation to their families. They want to be sure they play an active role in their children's lives should they get divorced. Seeking legal help can be a worthwhile step toward making sure that happens.
