Study: Antidepressant use decreases after divorce

Being in a marriage where it is becoming increasingly clearer and clearer it will not last can understandably be stressful. Over time, this stress can really start to eat away at a person’s health and well-being. In some cases, it can lead to health conditions and the need to take antidepressants and other types of psychotropic drugs.

A study looking at the connection between divorce and the use of antidepressants was recently conducted. While the study focused on Finnish people, one can assume the results would be similar here in Missouri.

The study found an increase in the use of antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs, such as sleeping pills, anxiety medications and sedatives, in the four years leading up to a divorce, with the highest increase being seen in the last few months leading up to a divorce.

However, what was interesting was that the study found a decrease in the use of the antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs after a divorce.

In looking at this study, going by the pattern, this may suggest that while there is a good deal of worry and unhappiness when a marriage is not working, this stress can go away and people can go on to live happy lives after a divorce.

Knowing this may give some people the strength that is needed to get off the fence and file for divorce.

If this is the case, and now is the time to file, those in Missouri are encouraged to reach out to a family law attorney right away.
