Common questions before filing for divorce

The majority of couples having marital problems in Missouri do not just jump into divorce. Rather, for many, this is something that they have either thought about — in some cases talked about — for some time. Or, in others, the possibility of divorce is something at least one of the spouses has thought about for some time.

In most situations, there comes a time when thinking about divorce leads to taking action, such as filing for divorce. Leading up to the point of actually filing for divorce there are naturally a number of questions that people tend to ask themselves. Below are some of the more common ones:

Did the divorce already happen?

Of course this does not mean if the divorce already happened from a legal standpoint, but rather from an emotional one. In cases where each spouse has their own daily routine and hardly spends any time with each other, it can feel like a divorce would just make the breakup legal.

Are there hard or soft problems in the marriage?

This is in reference to what kinds of issues are driving the two spouses apart. For example, if domestic violence or drug addiction is a problem, these are the types of hard issues where the spouse needs to get out of the relationship right away. Soft problems would more be issues related to falling out of love or each spouse growing apart.

Can it be possible to still care about each other?

It can be. While still loving each other may be enough of a reason to try and work things out, for many couples divorce is still the answer and the best choice. However, during and after the divorce realize that there are spouses who still care for each other, just not in a way where they want to remain married. Basically, every divorce does not need to continue to be bitter.

In the end, there is no doubt about it: Divorce is a big deal and a life-changing experience. This is why it is important to not just make rash decisions in order to get the whole ordeal over and done with. Rather, take the time to reach fair and sensible agreements that will make the most sense later on down the road.
