Missouri Lottery game winner arrested for unpaid child support

When a person wins a cash prize in a Missouri Lottery game, the lottery automatically checks to see if the winner has any outstanding child support payments due, before giving the winners their prize. It can be argued this is one way to find those parents who owe child support.

It appears this is what happened to one 22-year-old man who won $100,000 in a Missouri Lottery game. He had claimed the money, which probably equated to around $71,000 after taxes, back in September 2011.

In this case, the 22-year-old ended up being arrested several months later on five felony counts of failure to pay child support. He is also facing one misdemeanor charge of the same thing. He is reportedly behind $4,300 in child support for his 4-year-old child.

The man's arrest also came several months after his father was arrested for charges stemming from a high-profile case regarding an armored van that was stolen in England in 1993. At the time that the armored van was stolen, there was the equivalent of $1.5 million in British currency inside.

However, now it seems that his father's arrest was also somehow tied into his. According to sources, due to the case that was building against his father, officials were worried that the family would flee the country for England. Around that time, the state where the child support was owed -- Wisconsin -- sent a child support enforcement request to officials in Missouri. This request was sent just one month after the man won the lottery game.

In this case, it goes to show not only the way the lottery system works in Missouri when it comes to claiming cash prizes, but also goes to show that states will work with each other in order to track someone down who is late on child support payments.
